Thanks for homing in on my new website. This site is the 'front of house' for my literary and cultural interests, carrying current articles and reviews by me and about my books and public life in Scotland and Europe.
Scotland's historian-statesman, but without much standing-on-his-dignity and unafraid to mix it as a public intellectual. Chris Harvie's prose - analytical, waspish, gag-strewn, recondite, furious and eloquent - is as good an expression of the energies of Scottish life and thought as any of our poets and novelists (see these reviews of recent books, A Floating Commonweatlh and Broonland). Shaped by his early seventies Open University heydays, and by his time as an academic in the engineers' republic of Baden-Wuttemsberg, Harvie is for Scottish independence, public transport, a mixed economy, an intellectual approach to craft and trade, and the best that is thought and said in any cultural moment. Long may his volcano smoulder.
